Après minuit / Wrong place, wrong time

Jen et Kelly ont donné à leur garçon Todd, 18 ans, la permission de rentrer à une heure du matin, le 30 octobre 2022. Jen vient de terminer de préparer la citrouille et surveille à la fenêtre un peu inquiète pour son Todd. C’est la première fois qu’il revient si tard et si elle est soulagée de l’apercevoir au bout de la rue, elle est horrifiée alors qu’il poignarde un passant devant ses yeux. Rapidement, Todd est arrêté et amené au poste de police. Jen et Kelly s’y rendent, mais se voyant refuser l’accès à leur fils, ils retournent chez eux pour essayer de se reposer avant de tenter leur chance à nouveau le lendemain. Mais voilà, quand Jen se réveille, elle entend Kelly et Todd parler dans la cuisine. A-t-il été libéré ? Elle jette un coup d’œil à son téléphone qui affiche la date du 30 octobre et non le 31. Tout se passe exactement comme la veille au matin. Elle comprend rapidement qu’elle est dans une boucle temporelle. À partir de cet instant, sa quête est de faire en sorte d’empêcher que son fils commette le meurtre bien qu’elle n’ait aucune idée de ce qu’elle doit faire, ni de la manière dont fonctionne le voyage dans le temps. 

 

Le premier point que j’ai envie de souligner, c’est que j’ai trouvé incongrue la scène de départ. Que le timing soit parfait comme ça, c’est dur à croire. Que Todd soit si… détaché, insensible, c’est bizarre surtout quand on apprend à connaître sa personnalité. Mais bon, c’est de la fiction, alors j’ai rangé ça dans un coin et j’ai continué à lire avec intérêt. 

 

J’ai trouvé très réaliste que, comme la plupart de mères, son réflexe soit de se demander ce qu’elle a fait, n’a pas fait ou mal fait pour que ce drame se produise. Elle remet en question tous ses choix et cherche, dans le passé, ce qu’elle devrait faire différemment pour éviter le pire et qu’ils puissent tous trois reprendre leur vie sur le bon chemin. Or, est-ce que c’est là qu’elle trouvera comment changer ce qui arrivera le 30 octobre ? 

 

La construction à rebours a un effet captivant. On va de rebondissement en rebondissement. J’ai bien aimé tenter de démêler les fils et émettre des hypothèses de causes et découvrir, petit à petit, tous les liens. Je dois cependant dire qu’il y a eu quelques répétitions et des informations qui étaient à mon avis superflues et qui ont un peu freiné mon plaisir. Ce n’est rien de dramatique, toutefois.

 

Sans ces éléments, on aurait eu un excellent thriller. Un très bon, ce qu’on a, ce n’est pas si mal non plus, hein !

Jen and Kelly gave their son Todd, 18, a 1 a.m. curfew for a Halloween party on October 30, 2022. Jen has just finished carving the pumpkin and is looking out the window to see if Todd is on his way home. It's the first time he's come back this late and while she's relieved to see him at the end of the street, she's horrified to see him stab a passerby in front of her eyes. The police are quickly on site and Todd is arrested. Jen and Kelly go to the police station, but being denied access to their son, so they return home to try to rest before trying their luck again the next day. After finally falling asleep, when Jen wakes up, she hears Kelly and Todd talking in the kitchen. Was he released? She glances at her phone and sees that the date is October 30, not the 31st. Everything is happening exactly as the day before. She quickly realizes that she is in a time loop. From that moment on, she tries to understand what happened and how to prevent her son from committing this murder, although she has no idea what to do or how time travel works. 

 

The first point that I want to emphasize is that I found the starting scene incongruous. The perfect timing ( she is looking out the window, Todd and the passerby crossing paths from opposite directions at that exact moment, etc.) is hard to believe. That Todd is so… detached, insensitive, is weird, especially when you get to know his personality. But hey, it’s fiction, so I put it in a corner and continued reading with interest.

 

On an other end, I found it very realistic that, like most mothers, Jen’s reflex is to ask herself what she did, did not do or did wrong to make this tragedy happen. She questions all her choices and searches in the past for what she should do differently to avoid the worst and so that all three of them can get their lives back on the right path. Now, is this the way she will find how to change what will happen on October 30?

The backward construction is captivating. 

We go from plot twist to plot twist. I really enjoyed trying to unravel the threads and hypothesize 

the causes and discover, little by little, all the links between everyone and everything. I must say,

however, that there were some repetitions and information that were, in my opinion, superfluous 

and which dampened my enjoyment a little. It's nothing dramatic, however.

Without these elements, we would have had an excellent thriller. 

A very good one is what we have, and it ok!
